kigo for spring

white spectacled bulbul = Pycnonotus xanthopygos sometimes called `yellow-vented bulbul' because it has bright distinct yellow feathers in the vent area, visible only from below and behind. (a common songbird that essentially takes the place of the American Robin of North America and that has a similar melodious song); so called the arabian nightingale.

Bhutan

kigo for spring
when the bulbul migrate to higher valleys.

We have a wet and windy spring here (2010).
Here's a haiku about the recent rain and wind storms here and its effect on birds and blossoms:

rain, wind, rain
plum blossoms have faded
no bulbul in sight

India

Bulbuls are a family, Pycnonotidae, of medium-sized passerine songbirds. Many forest species are known as greenbuls. The family is distributed across most of Africa and into the Middle East, tropical Asia to Indonesia, and north as far as Japan. A few insular species occur on the tropical islands of the Indian Ocean There are about 130 species in around 24 genera. While some species are found in most habitats, overall African species are predominantly found in rainforest whilst rainforest species are rare in Asia, instead preferring more open areas.
The only Bulbul which occurs in Europe was spotted in the Cyclades and bears a yellow patch, being otherwise of a snuffy brown and this is possibly the bird which has got mixed up with the nightingale in Sufi, particularly Persian Sufi, poetry.

The Red-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer) is a member of the bulbul family of passerines. It is resident breeder across the Indian Subcontinent, including Sri Lanka extending east to Burma and parts of Tibet.

There are no distinct boundaries to these racial forms and recent works do not recognize pallidus and saturatus (designated by Whistler & Kinnear, 1932 for the northeastern Peninsular India) but accept the desert form humayuni from Sindh and northwestern India, northeast Indian stanfordii (=stanfordi Deignan, 1949) and the Sri Lankan race haemorrhous (=haemorrhousus (J. F. Gmelin, 1789) ).
Race melanchimus is found in Southern Burma and northern Thailand.

Kenya

Pycnonotus barbatus : Yellow-vented Bulbul, Common Bulbul, Black-eyed Bulbul, White-eared Bulbul, Garden Bulbul

The bulbul is a common bird in many parts of Kenya too, including the western suburbs of Nairobi. As it is not commonly observed in the Eastlands of Nairobi, where most members of Kenya Saijiki live, it has not yet been identified as a kigo in Kenya.

This is a distinctive, adaptable and very bold bird which has readily taken to living alongside humans. It is omnivorous which makes it superbly adapted to life around lodge dining rooms! They are generally found in pairs in wooded and shrubby habitats, adapting well to artificial environments such as gardens and parks.

It is similar in look and habit to Dodson's Bulbul but is lacks the white ear-coverts and distinctive breast mottling characteristic of this other species. Some authorities treat both birds as being races of Pycnonotus barbatus.

The girl and the young man who appears to be her father are sitting on a pile of stones by the road side. Suddenly the girl says something and smiles brilliantly. The smile hovers on her face for a while, but the man just keeps looking straight ahead.
