Taal Lake is a freshwater lake in the province of Batangas, on the island of Luzon, Philippines. The lake is situated within a caldera formed by very large eruptions between 500,000 and 100,000 years ago. Taal is only 30 miles (50 kilometers) south of Manila on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Since 1572, Taal Volcano has erupted at least 34 times.

Taal Lake was once just an arm of Balayan Bay. However, after a series of major eruptions in the 16th century, the lake was closed off from the sea by newly-formed land bridges. Taal Lake's sole connection to the sea narrowed down into its sole draining river, the Pansipit River. Several centuries of precipitation have diluted the lake's once-saline waters into pure freshwater.

Succeeding eruptions buried numerous lakeside towns. Presently, only three towns are on the lake's shore. Old lakeside towns with buildings and walls are reported to be seen under the lake's waters.

On January 5, 2008, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Philippines) (BFAR) announced that a fishkill at Taal Lake (January 2 to 4) caused the 50 metric tons loss of cultured tilapia in the villages of Leviste and Balakilong in Laurel and in Barangay Aya and Barangay Quiling in Talisay. 6,000 maliputo fishes also died at Quiling. Toxic sulfur and high level of hydrogen sulfide in Ambulong while low dissolved oxygen caused the deaths.

Since early 1991, the volcano has been restless, with swarms of earthquakes, new steaming areas, ground fracturing, and increases in water temperature of the lake. Volcanologists and other local authorities are carefully monitoring Taal to understand if the current activity may foretell an eruption. Taal is one of 15 "Decade Volcanoes" that have been identified by the volcanology community as presenting large potential hazards to population centers

By the serene lake
I deftly toss the net,
a school of fish.

By the serene lake
freshly caught kanduli
for mother's fish soup.

By the serene lake
a shool of tawilis
into the fry pan.

Kite festival -
everything that flies
and hovers around!

After a cockfight -
blood and more blood
the crows of brood cocks.

Sunglight passes thru
the thick foliage,
pricks the eyes.

Sugar apples
blest daily by the sun
for summer harvest.

By the serene lake,
I paint the moon and stars
for my wife.

By the serene lake,
everything that is plastic
and rubbish.

By the serene lake
a solitary soul
walking by the shore.

By the serene lake
bancas kept afloat
with bamboo poles.

By the serene lake
sailing and canoeing
the tricky part.

By the serene lake,
tandem of rowers vying
for the Olympics.

Some Swiss watch fans eager to wear the work of a fine maker may have to upgrade after the country's Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie categorised the industry for the first time, clarifying which brands are in and out of the exclusive club. In a three-year review of 86 brands, 64 were selected as examples of fine watchmaking, according to the Swiss organiser of the Geneva watch salon and breitling replica Watches & Wonders exhibition. Richemont's Cartier, Rolex and Swatch Group AG's Omega made the cut. Richemont's Baume & Mercier, Rolex's sister brand Tudor and Swatch's Longines didn't. The industry group says it's the first comprehensive effort to classify high-end Swiss brands in a business where the perception of exclusivity equals all-important bragging rights. The replica watches uk group said it wanted to bring clarity to the consumer about what it means to buy a fine watch - even if that involved excluding some other well-known brands. Money isn't everything and in some cases heritage trumped cheap omega watches price tags: Cartier made it into the rankings even though its watches generally sell for thousands less than a Patek Philippe.
