the warm rays of the sun
that gladdens the heart

the feeling of being one
with a proud crowd
the gentle wind blows
on brows that stand mighty proud -
Independence Day
Philippine flags sway
and the anthem proudly plays -

Independence Day
... I left the country
twenty years ago
Not a good one, nor a good advertisement. I find the flags, the banners, horns and hats a display of patriotism, but I would like to see the country truly free -- of corruption, of poverty, of nepotism, of hunger and greed, and of the heavy sense of spiritual guilt and dependence laid upon its citizens' shoulders by "the church". I would like to see the land of my birth TRULY and ENDURINGLY FREE.

thoughts of Manila ...
heavy cloud shadows
on the paper
gray cogon ...
the desolate fields where
once my heart dwelt
sundown -
a stray dog barks
at strangers
bay sunset -
the stench of garbage
darkening
nightlife -
Mabini's red lights
delay the morning
sun long dead -
the homeland darkens
in the distance
