Screw worm outbreak expected as winter approaches.
A new outbreak of screw worm in Taiz, Ibb and Dhamar governorates in central Yemen has killed hundreds of livestock, particularly in Taiz's Sharaab District where half the estimated 40,000 population depend on livestock for a living, local officials say.

The larva of the fly Cochliomyia hominivorax (new world screwworm) or Chrysomya bezziana (old word screwworm). The larva can be parasitic in humans and animals and are distinctive in eating living flesh of mammals unlike most maggots which eat only dead flesh.

Screw worms are the larvae of a kind of fly that lays eggs in the open wounds of cattle. When they hatch, the maggots feed on the animal's tissue, using sharp mandibles to tear at the flesh. Screw worms can kill cattle in 10 days if left untreated.
