Unrest in Yemen 2011

For the past few days, anti-government protesters have been gaining momentum in the capital of Yemen: Sana’a. They were met by the pro-government squads, which lead to violent and bloody clashes.

It seems that the recent departure of Mubarak in Egypt has ignited a long simmering anger in this southern Arabian Peninsula country. Arabic people woke up to the fact that together they stand strong and that no Regime however repressive can resist public opposition. The old say: “Vox populi, Vox dei” is materializing before our very eyes. The Region’s consciousness has awakened from its long sleep and it wants to shape its future.

Yemen, like Egypt, suffers from chronicle poverty and unemployment. Corruption is as well running rampant, and many are disappointed in the President’s policies as it only rewards the rich and well connected.

Libya

Libya gained independence as the Kingdom of Libya in 1951.
Libya has been ruled from 1969 to the present by Muammar al-Gaddafi, who rose to power in a military coup.

In February 2011 mass protests and demonstrations broke out across Libya against Gaddafi's government. The Libyan opposition is reported to be in control of several towns and cities in eastern and central coastal Libya.

Tarsiers are haplorrhine primates of the genus Tarsius, a genus in the family Tarsiidae, which is itself the lone extant family within the infraorder Tarsiiformes. Although the group was once more widespread, all the species living today are found in the islands of Southeast Asia.

Philippine Tarsier (Tarsius syrichta)



The Philippine Tarsier (Tarsius syrichta or Carlito syrichta), known locally as the Maumag in Cebuano/Visayan and Mamag in Luzon, is an endangered species of tarsier endemic to the Philippines. It is found in the southeastern part of the archipelago, particularly in the islands of Bohol Island, Samar Island, Leyte Island and Mindanao. It is a member of the approximately 45 million year old family Tarsiidae, whose name is derived from its elongated "tarsus" or ankle bone.

Its geographic range also includes Maripipi Island, Siargao Island, Basilan Island and Dinagat Island. Tarsiers have also been reported in Sarangani, although they may be different subspecies.

It was only introduced to western biologists in the 18th century.

The Philippine Tarsier has been called "the world's smallest monkey" or "smallest primate".

Lonchura
is a genus of the estrildid finch family, and includes munias (or minias), mannikins, and silverbills. They are resident breeding birds in Africa and in South Asia from India and Sri Lanka east to Indonesia and the Philippines. The name mannikin is from Middle Dutch mannekijn 'little man' (also the source of the different bird name manakin).

Some of the Lonchura species were formerly placed in Spermestes. Others have been placed in a genus of their own, Euodice.

The Lantern Festival is a traditional Chinese festival since Han Dynasty more than 2000 years ago. In the early Tan Dynasty (618-907AD), it was called the Shan-Yuan Festival, because of Taoism. in the late Tan Dynasty, it was called the Yuan-Xiao Festival. It was called Lantern Night in the Sun Dynasty (960-1297 A.D.). The Lantern Festival was used in Ching Dynasty (1644-1911 AD).

According to Taoism, Shan-Yuan (first period of the year) Festival is the birthday of the Heaven Officer who blesses human luck. On the 15th lunar day of 7th lunar month is Chung-Yuan (middle period of the year) Festival, which is the birthday of the Hell Officer who has right to pardon ghosts. On this day, all the ghosts can leave hell to human world for food. So the 7th lunar month is called Ghost Month. Many Chinese won't get married in this month. The 15th lunar day of 10th lunar month is Xia-Yaun (last period of the year) Festival. This day is the birthday of the Water Officer who can rescue people in trouble.

On the 15th lunar day of the year, some Chinese families worship the Heaven Officer of Taoism and pray for luck at home or temple during the daytime. Traditionally, Chinese should decorate the light lanterns around the house and children carry the candle paper lantern on the street at night. It might the safety concern, not too many follow this custom today. In stead, many people will attend different activities of the Lantern Festival.

Egypt, the most populous country in the Arab world, erupted in mass protests in January 2011, as the revolution in Tunisia seemed to inflame decades worth of smoldering grievances against the heavy-handed rule of President Hosni Mubarak.

After 18 days of angry protests, Mr. Mubarak resigned and turned over all power to the military on Feb. 11, 2011, ending his 30 years of autocratic rule and bowing to a historic popular uprising that has transformed politics in Egypt and around the Arab world. The announcement, delivered during evening prayers in Cairo, set off a frenzy of celebration, with protesters shouting
“Egypt is free!”

The popular protest, peaceful and resilient despite numerous effort by Mr. Mubarak’s legendary security apparatus to suppress it, ultimately deposed an ally of the United States who has been instrumental in implementing American policy in the region for decades.

My Dear Fellow Haiku Poets:

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the Egyptian revolution that ousted Hosni Mubarak from power. Rather than celebrating this great day, the Egyptian youth are taking to the streets once again to protest the military's abuse of power.

Here is my haiku for these courageous young people:

African American work songs

Corn was a very common subject of work songs on a typical plantation. Because the crop was the main component of the slaves’ diet, they would often sing about it regardless of whether it was being harvested.
Often, communities in the south would hold “corn-shucking jubilees,” during which an entire community of planters would gather on one plantation. The planters would bring their harvests, as well as their slaves, and work such as shucking corn, rolling logs, or threshing rice would be done, accompanied by the singing of the slaves doing work. The following is an example of a song slaves would sing as they approached one of these festivals. It is from ex-slave William Wells Brown’s memoir “ My Southern Home.”

All them pretty gals will be there,
Shuck that corn before you eat;
They will fix it for us rare,
huck that corn before you eat.

I know that supper will be big,
Shuck that corn before you eat;
I think I smell a fine roast pig,
Shuck that corn before you eat . . . .

When I was a child, the local farmers had a harvest festival.
One of the highlights was the corn shucking contest. The men would compete to see who could strip the shucks from the dried ears of corn the fastest. The women would cook a huge meal and the children would play and watch. Once in a while one of the bigger kids would try his luck at the corn shucking and get laughed at when he failed miserably.

Yams are the tuberous root of dioscorea batatis and other diocorea species which are tropical vines. Dioscorea transversa is the Native Yam, known as 'midiny' or 'wanka-parlu'.

was one of the first things I learned whilst studying anthropology at Heidelberg University, many years back.
"Primitive Kunst", "Stammeskunst" (primitive art)
was at that time one of the specialites of the Heidelberg department.
Dot painting (Punktmalerei) had also been introduced.

Dreamtime, called among others "Tjurkurrpa", "Altjeringa" or "Palaneri", refers more to the time of the creation of the universe.

Emily Kame Kngwarreye (1910-1996)
is one of Australia’s most significant artists.

Emily produced her work at an astounding rate; it is estimated that she painted over 3,000 works over the course of her eight-year career, an average of one painting per day. Emily completed Big Yam Dreaming in just two days. Without preliminary sketching, Emily painted sitting cross-legged on the three-by-eight meter canvas, working her way from the center to it’s edges. Given Emily’s technique of painting by sitting on the floor, her works have no prescribed orientation, except in a few cases.

Explanation




The island of Boracay is 7.5 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide.
The popular powdery White Sand Beach (which take up most of the western side of the island) is where most of tourist go to see and be seen. Boracay Island has electricity and piped water and has grown into an international tourist hub with 20 dive sites, scores of bars and restaurants, native tattoo parlours, banks, a fire department, and a police station.
There is also a Tourist Center that also serves as a souvenir shop and an airline reservation center.
