Whitney Elizabeth Houston
(August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012)
was an American singer, actress, producer, and model. Houston was the most awarded female act of all time, according to Guinness World Records. Her list of awards includes 2 Emmy Awards, 6 Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards, among a total of 415 career awards as of 2010.

Houston was also one of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide.Inspired by prominent soul singers in her family, including her mother Cissy Houston, cousins Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick, and her godmother Aretha Franklin, Houston began singing with New Jersey church's junior gospel choir at age 11.
After she began performing alongside her mother in night clubs in the New York City area, she was discovered by Arista Records label head Clive Davis. Houston released seven studio albums and three movie soundtrack albums, all of which have diamond, multi-platinum, platinum or gold certification.

On February 11, 2012,
Houston was found dead at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, in Beverly Hills, California, of causes not immediately known. Beverly Hills paramedics found the singer unresponsive and performed CPR for about 20 minutes before declaring her dead at 3:55 p.m.
Local police said there were "no obvious signs of criminal intent."

Explanation

The Yukon River
is a major watercourse of northwestern North America. The source of the river is located in British Columbia, Canada. The next portion lies in, and gives its name to Yukon Territory.
The lower half of the river lies in the U.S. state of Alaska. The river is 1,980 miles (3,190 km) long and empties into the Bering Sea at the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.
The average flow is 6,430 m³/s (227,000 ft³/s).The total drainage area is 832,700 km² (321,500 mi²), of which 323,800 km² (126,300 mi²) is in Canada.
By comparison, the total area is more than 25% larger than Texas or Alberta.



The longest river in Alaska and the Yukon Territory, it was one of the principal means of transportation during the 1896–1903 Klondike Gold Rush.

Yukon means "great river" in Gwich'in. The river was called Kuigpak, or "big river", in Central Yup'ik. The Lewes River is the former name of the upper course of the Yukon, from Marsh Lake to the confluence of the Pelly River at Fort Selkirk.

Big Sur
is a sparsely populated region of the Central Coast of California where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean. The name "Big Sur" is derived from the original Spanish-language "el sur grande", meaning "the big south", or from "el país grande del sur", "the big country of the south".
The terrain offers stunning views, making Big Sur a popular tourist destination. Big Sur's Cone Peak is the highest coastal mountain in the contiguous 48 states, ascending nearly a mile (5,155 feet/1571 m) above sea level, only three miles (4.8 km) from the ocean.

Although Big Sur has no specific boundaries, many definitions of the area include the 90 miles (140 km) of coastline from the Carmel River south to the San Carpoforo Creek, and extend about 20 miles (32 km) inland to the eastern foothills of the Santa Lucias. Other sources limit the eastern border to the coastal flanks of these mountains, only three to 12 miles (19 km) inland. Another practical definition of the region is the segment of California State Route 1 between San Simeon and Carmel.

The northern end of Big Sur is about 120 miles (190 km) south of San Francisco, and the southern end is approximately 245 miles (394 km) northwest of Los Angeles.

Explanation

Cape Fear is a prominent headland jutting into the Atlantic Ocean from Bald Head Island on the coast of North Carolina in the southeastern United States. It is largely formed of barrier beaches and the silty outwash of the Cape Fear River as it drains the southeast coast of North Carolina through an estuary south of Wilmington. Cape Fear is formed by the intersection of two sweeping arcs of shifting, low-lying beach, the result of longshore currents which also form the treacherous, shifting Frying Pan Shoals, part of the Graveyard of the Atlantic.


The Cape Fear estuary drains the largest watershed in North Carolina, containing 27% of the state's population.

Space Shuttle Challenger
(NASA Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-099) was NASA's second Space Shuttle orbiter to be put into service, Columbia having been the first. The shuttle was built by Rockwell International's Space Transportation Systems Division in Downey, California. Its maiden flight was on April 4, 1983, and it completed nine missions before breaking apart 73 seconds after the launch of its tenth mission, STS-51-L on January 28, 1986, resulting in the death of all seven crew members. It was the first of two shuttles (the other being Columbia) to be destroyed.


Space Shuttle Challenger disaster
The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occurred on January 28, 1986, when Space Shuttle Challenger (mission STS-51-L) broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, leading to the deaths of its seven crew members. The spacecraft disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of central Florida at 11:38 EST (16:38 UTC). Disintegration of the entire vehicle began after an O-ring seal in its right solid rocket booster (SRB) failed at liftoff.



The O-ring failure caused a breach in the SRB joint it sealed, allowing pressurized hot gas from within the solid rocket motor to reach the outside and impinge upon the adjacent SRB attachment hardware and external fuel tank. This led to the separation of the right-hand SRBs aft attachment and the structural failure of the external tank. Aerodynamic forces promptly broke up the orbiter.

If I may briefly remember Richard Feynman, Nobel Prize-winning theoretical physicist, and one of the greatest, if not THE greatest physicist since Einstein.

In front of the US House of Representatives hearing on the Challenger disaster, live on tv, he demonstrated the problem with the O-rings by dipping O-ring material in a glass of ice water, which made it break rather easily as I recall. The demonstration was stupefyingly shocking in its brutal simplicity. If I'm remembering correctly, NASA at the time was having difficulty figuring out why the O-rings had failed.

Feynman was on the Rogers Commission that investigated the Challenger disaster, and wouldn't sign off on the report unless his scathing criticisms of NASA's safety protocols were included in the report, which they were.

Indonesia officially the
Republic of Indonesia (Indonesian: Republik Indonesia), is a country in Southeast Asia and Oceania. Indonesia comprises 17,508 islands. With a population of around 230 million people, it is the world's fourth most populous country, and has the world's largest population of Muslims. Indonesia is a republic, with an elected legislature and president.

Indonesia consists of 17,508 islands, about 6,000 of which are inhabited. These are scattered over both sides of the equator.

Indonesia's size, tropical climate, and archipelagic geography, support the world's second highest level of biodiversity (after Brazil), and its flora and fauna is a mixture of Asian and Australasian species.

The climate of Indonesia is almost entirely tropical.
Temperature varies little from season to season, and Indonesia experiences relatively little change in the length of daylight hours from one season to the next; the difference between the longest day and the shortest day of the year is only forty-eight minutes. This allows crops to be grown all year round.

The main variable of Indonesia's climate is not temperature or air pressure, but rainfall.
Winds are moderate and generally predictable, with monsoons usually blowing in
from the south and east in June through September and
from the northwest in December through March.

Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Buddhist Temple is one of the largest buddhist-taoist temple in South East Asia. There are several worshipping halls which could accommodate up to a few hundreds devotees at one time. There are rooms and space dedicated to Kuan Gong (God of War) , Sidharta Gaotama and GuangYing (Goddess of Mercy) .
The Temple is also where a lot of buddhists go to do their meditation. Buddhist lessons are also being taught here.

This hokku is from Issa's diary for New Year's for 1823.
It refers to Issa's infant son Konzaburo, who was born in April 1822. He greets the new year in the arms of his mother Kiku and smiles widely and auspiciously, giving Issa the impression it will be a good year for the family. Unfortunately Kiku died in June 1823 at age thirty-seven, and Konzaburo died a little less than a year later, in January 1824.

Color symbolism, in the forms of ribbons and bracelets, is pretty much apparent throughout the world, and pink has several meanings, which might be a problem for some men. My wife and several lady friends are breast cancer survivors, and it is my challenge that real men wear pink in October for the women they love.
