Explanation


Arthur's Day refers to a series of music events which were first organised in 2009 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Guinness brewing company by its owner Diageo plc.



Those events took place internationally in the cities of Dublin, Kuala Lumpur, Lagos, New York and Yaoundé on 23 September 2009. The event was broadcast internationally on Sky TV, ITV2 and DirecTV.
€6 million has been pledged to the Arthur Guinness Fund.
The celebration has been endorsed by several high-profile names, such as rock star-turned political activist Bob Geldof, director and screenwriter Guy Ritchie, footballer and Guinness football ambassador for Africa Michael Essien and British celebrities such as Peter Crouch, Sophie Dahl.

Guinness drinkers are expected to raise a glass to the memory of Arthur Guinness at 17:59 (5:59 pm), a reference to 1759, the year the Guinness Brewery was established.. An 82c stamp of an Arthur Guinness portrait was also released by An Post to commemorate the anniversary.

Arthur's Day 2012 took place on 27 September.

Arthur Guinness
(1724 or 1725 – 23 January 1803)
was an Irish brewer and the founder of the Guinness brewery business and family. He was also an entrepreneur, visionary and philanthropist.




At 27, in 1752, Guinness's godfather Arthur Price, the Church of Ireland Archbishop of Cashel, bequeathed him £100 in his will. Guinness invested the money and in 1755 had a brewery at Leixlip, just 17 km from Dublin. In 1759, Guinness went to the city and set up his own business. He took a 9,000 year lease on the 4-acre (16,000 m2) brewery at St. James's Gate from Sir Mark Rainsford for an annual rent of £45.

Harumafuji Kōhei 日馬富士 公平,
born April 14, 1984
as Davaanyamyn Byambadorj, Mongolian:
Даваанямын Бямбадорж),
previously known as Ama Kōhei, is a sumo wrestler. He is a yokozuna, sumo's highest rank, receiving his promotion September 26, 2012, the third consecutive Mongolian and fifth overall foreign-born wrestler to attain that exalted rank.




Regarded as a relative lightweight, Harumafuji is noted for his technical skill. He has won ten special prizes for his achievements in tournaments.

He began his professional career in 2001 and reached the top makuuchi division in 2004. In November 2008 he became the seventh foreign-born wrestler in sumo history to reach the second highest rank of ōzeki. In May 2009, he won his first championship, winning the Natsu Basho (May tournament). He won the championship for the second consecutive time with a perfect record, and fourth time overall, in the 2012 September Aki Basho.

Byambadorj is a native of Ulan Bator, Mongolia.
His father was a Mongolian wrestler, holding a rank roughly equivalent to sumo's sekiwake. He appeared at the Naadam, a Mongolian games festival that includes wrestling, at the age of 15. He was scouted by Ajigawa-oyakata in July 2000 and subsequently joined Ajigawa stable (now Isegahama stable). He took the fighting name Ama and made his first appearance in January 2001. He reached the top makuuchi division in November 2004, rising slowly to komusubi in May 2006. However, a disappointing 4–11 result in this tournament sent him back to the maegashira ranks.

Perhaps the best-known musical form of the Mongols is the throat singing tradition known as hoomii - khoomei , extant among all or most Mongols though best known internationally from Tuva. Sung differently than traditional vocals. In Mongolia, the most famous throat-singers include Khalkhas like Gereltsogt and Sundui, while the Tuvan group Huun-Huur-Tu has an international following.

Tuvan throat singing is one particular variant of overtone singing practiced by the Tuva people of southern Siberia.





The art of Tuvan throat singing is a style in which one or more pitches sound simultaneously over a fundamental pitch, producing a unique sound. The history of Tuvan throat singing reaches very far back. Many of the male herders can throat sing, but women are beginning to practice the technique as well. The popularity of throat singing among Tuvans seems to have arisen as a result of geographic location and culture. The open landscape of Tuva allows for the sounds to carry a great distance. Ethnomusicologists studying throat singing in these areas mark khoomei as an integral part in the ancient pastoral animism that is still practiced today. Often, singers will travel far into the countryside looking for the right river, or will go up to the steppes of the mountainside to create the proper environment for throat-singing.

The animistic world view of this region identifies the spirituality of objects in nature, not just in their shape or location, but in their sound as well. Thus, human mimicry of nature's sounds is seen as the root of throat singing. (An example is the Mongolian story of the waterfall above the Buyan Gol (Deer River), where mysterious harmonic sounds are said to have attracted deer to bask in the waters, and where it is said harmonic sounds were first revealed to people.) Indeed, the cultures in this part of Asia have developed many instruments and techniques to mimic the sounds of animals, wind, and water. While the cultures of this region share throat singing, their styles vary in breadth of development.

It is simply the harmonized sounds that they are able to produce from deep within their throats.Ordinarily, melodies are created by isolating the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 12th partial in accordance with the harmonic series (if fundamental frequency were C3, the overtones would be:
G5, B♭5, C6, D6, E6, G6).
The base pitch is typically around a G below Middle C.

In physical geography, a steppe
(from Russian: степь, ),
is an ecoregion, in the montane grasslands and shrublands and temperate grasslands, savannas, and shrublands biomes, characterized by grassland plains without trees apart from those near rivers and lakes. The prairie (especially the shortgrass and mixed prairie) is an example of a steppe, though it is not usually called such. It may be semi-desert, or covered with grass or shrubs or both, depending on the season and latitude. The term is also used to denote the climate encountered in regions too dry to support a forest, but not dry enough to be a desert. The soil is typically of chernozem type.

Steppes are usually characterized by a semi-arid and continental climate.

Two types of steppe can be recorded:

The Mongolian-Manchurian grassland ecoregion,
also known as
the Mongolian-Manchurian steppe,
in the temperate grassland Biome, is found in Mongolia, the Chinese Autonomous region of Inner Mongolia and northeastern China.

The Mongolian-Manchurian grassland covers an area of 887,300 square kilometers (342,600 sq mi). This Palearctic temperate grasslands, savannas, and shrublands ecoregion of the Temperate grasslands, savannas, and shrublands Biome, forms a large crescent around the Gobi Desert, extending across central and eastern Mongolia into the eastern portion of Inner Mongolia and eastern and central Manchuria, and then southwest across the North China Plain.

To the northeast and north, the Selenge-Orkhon and Daurian forest steppes form a transition zone between the grassland and the forests of Siberia to the north. On the east and southeast, the grasslands transition to temperate broadleaf and mixed forests, including the Manchurian mixed forests, Northeast China Plain deciduous forests, and Central China loess plateau mixed forests. On the southwest, the grasslands extend to the Yellow River, across which is the Ordos Plateau steppe.

FLORA
The dominant flora consists of medium to tall grasslands, dominated by feather grass (Stipa baicalensis, S. capillata, and S. grandis), Sheep's Fescue (Festuca ovina), Aneurolepidium chinense, Filifolium sibiricuman, and Cleistogenes sqarrosa. The drier regions surrounding the Gobi host drought-tolerant grasses, together with forbs and low, spiny shrubs.

The southwestern slopes of the Greater Khingan range support pockets of broadleaf deciduous forest, of either Mongolian Oak (Quercus mongolica), or a mixture of poplar (Populus davidiana and P. suaveolens), Siberian Silver Birch (Betula platyphylla), and willow (Salix rorida).


FAUNA
The Brown Eared-Pheasant (Crossoptilon mantchuricum) is the sole endemic bird in the ecoregion.

A tumbleweed is the above-ground part of a plant that, once mature and dry, disengages from the root and tumbles away in the wind. Usually, the tumbleweed is the entire plant apart from the roots, but in a few species it is a flower cluster.

In Malaysia, the game is called sepak raga or "takraw". It is also thuck thay (Lao: "twine" and "kick") while in Thailand it is sometimes called takraw. In Myanmar it is known as chin lone. In the Philippines, besides "takraw" it is also known as sipa, meaning "kick".

Similar games include footbag net, footvolley, football tennis, bossaball, jianzi and sipa. These similar games all involve keepie uppies.

In 1845 famous Mongolian poet Lama of Gobi desert Danzanravjaa met Morita san in Beijing. Morita san studied Mongolian art in Khamar monastery for 3 years. He planted a nice tree near Khamar monastery and it is “бүйлс” in Mongolian was Japanese sakura.
Researchers consider that from this time the Haiku is being developed in Mongolia.

Khamar Monastery
Khamar Monastery was established in the 1820's by famous 19th century Mongolian educator and literary figure Danzanravjaa. The Monastery was an important centre of the Buddhist "red sect", and seat of the Gobiin Dogshin Noyon Khutagt ("Terrible Noble Saint of the Gobi").



The "Namtar duulakh datsan" (story-singing college), established at Khamar Monastery in the 1830s, is recognized as being Mongolia's first professional theatre. The nearby "Khuukhdiin datsan" (children's college) offered basic and vocation, artistic training for local children, who often went on to become singers and dancers, painters, sculptors, and other artists at the Monastery or in its theatre company, In addition Khamar Monastery included a public library, museum, poetry recital hall, and other facilities, making it an important regional cultural centre, in the words of renowned Mongolian scholar Ts.Damdinsuren:

"Khamar Monastery was a perfectly harmonious location, having a river
whit many fine trees along its south part and rocky mountains with dozens of caves along its north; and the place was filled with the noise of hundreds of people playing the famous Saran Khokhoo drama...'

The local public was involved in many religious activities held at the Monastery, including the Tsam dance festival and the Amaagiin Gandoi Ergekh ceremony. Under Danzanravjaa's influence women were especially encouraged to participate in these events; Khamar Monastery was unique in 19th century Mongolia as a place where women were accorded greater respect and privileges than men.

Explanation





Tiger Balm Gardens is the name of public pleasure gardens that existed or continue in three east Asia locations. They are also known as Haw Par Villa gardens.

There are three Tiger Balm Garden locations , all were built by the Aw family (Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par). They were created to promote the Tiger Balm products produced by the family.

The original garden was located in Hong Kong but is now closed. The second is in Singapore, and a third is in Fujian, Mainland China.

The gardens contain statues and dioramas depicting scenes from Chinese folklore, legends, history and illustrations of various aspects of Confucianism.

Tiger Balm 虎標萬金油
is the trademark for a heat rub manufactured and distributed by Haw Par Healthcare in Singapore.

It was originally developed in the 1870s by an herbalist, Aw Chu Kin, in Rangoon, Burma, who on his deathbed asked his sons Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par to perfect the product.

Originally named for containing tiger bone, an ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine dating back 1,500 years to treat pain, inflammation and to strengthen muscle,
Tiger Balm now consists purely of herbal ingredients. Tiger Balm is available in several varieties, the "cold" Tiger Balm White (recommended for use with headaches) and the "hot" Tiger Balm Red.
Another version is called Tiger Balm Ultra.

Explanation

Kookaburras (genus Dacelo)
are terrestrial tree kingfishers native to Australia and New Guinea. They are large to very large, with a total length of 28–42 cm (11–17 in). The name is a loanword from Wiradjuri guuguubarra, and is onomatopoeic of its call.



Kookaburras are best known for their unmistakable call, which sounds uncannily like loud, echoing human laughter – good-natured, but rather hysterical, merriment in the case of the renowned Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae); and maniacal cackling in the case of the slightly smaller Blue-winged Kookaburra (D. leachii). They are generally not closely associated with water, and can be found in habitats ranging from humid forest to arid savanna, but also in suburban and residential areas near running water and where food can be searched for easily.

Kookaburras are carnivorous. In the wild, kookaburras are known to eat the young of other birds and snakes, and insects and small reptiles and even other small birds, such as finches if they are lucky enough to catch them. In zoos, they are usually fed food for birds of prey, and dead baby chicks.

Kookaburras will eat lizards, snakes, insects, mice, other small birds, and raw meat.
The most social birds will accept handouts from humans and will take raw or cooked meat (even if at high temperature) from on or near open-air barbecues left unattended.
It is generally not advised to feed kookaburras too regularly as meat alone does not include calcium and other nutrients essential to the bird. Remainders of mince on the bird's beak can fester and cause problems for the bird.

They are territorial, and except for the Rufous-bellied often live with the partly grown chicks of the previous season. They often sing as a chorus to mark their territory.

It is difficult to re-plant the Japanese kigo concept in areas that have different seasonal aspects and no "kigo culture".

A standard or rather many standards for seasons in Australia to be used for regional colletions of season words is still under construction. It depends on the Australian haiku poets and what they choose to write their poetry about.
Please contribute your aspects of existing season words or new season words you suggest for your area to help deepen the worldwide understanding of haiku poets for regional diversity.

It is a difficult undertaking, taking into consideration the various climate zones of the continent.

Apart from trying to find regional season words, we also suggest to collect and specify topics (keywords) for the areas where haiku poets have started writing Japanese-style short poetry.

If there is not specifical mention, a calendar reference kigo in the World Kigo Database refers to the Northern Hemisphere as its place of origin.
For the Southern Hemisphere, add six months.
December and short night are season words for summer in the Southern Hemisphere, for example.

Calendar reference kigo
are for example the names of each month and then the many festivals of a specific date and the memorial days.
Japanese haiku poets up from the North of Hokkaido down to the South of Okinawa have no problem when using DECEMBER as a kigo, for example, since kigo are conventions for writing poetry.

mid-north coast of New South Wales
It is a sub tropical area.
We do not experience seasons in the traditional sense. There is a quasi-summer starting at the end of September lasting till November. Summer properly starts then and can last till mid-March.
There is a short pre-Autumn for then till mid-April.
From then to the end of May it is clearly Autumn.
Winter varies a lot, but most years it will be June through to mid August.
True spring is very short here.

Flooding occurs anytime from September to the end of April and it defines the hot months. Flooding could be a season word for this period.
As well there is a native rush called Lomandra that has distinctive and beautifully perfumed blooms that grows by rivers. For many Australians living in this area, this is the scent of summer, so it could be a season word.
Jacaranda flowers are the most distinctive display of the late spring/early summer here and one of the ways people recognise the seasonal change.

Cassia and Tibochina flower at the same time during the pre-Autumn period and mark the season.
Paperpark trees also flower at this time, attracting lorikeets whose noisy carry on signals there arrival.
The outstanding feature of winter here is the dryness. It usually does not rain the whole winter. Grevillias flower in Winter.
Wattle arrives at the end of winter and is spring's herald.

OF the broader developments in recent Australian poetry, one of the more prominent has been an increasing engagement with the cultures and poetic traditions of Asia. Open a contemporary collection at random and you're likely to find a haiku or a pantoum sitting alongside a sonnet or a set of quatrains. In terms of content, Bombay buses and Cambodian cyclos jostle with scooters in St Kilda and roo bars in the Pilbara.

In Martial Arts, the compact movements of the martial artist are conceived as "deadly haikus/an art as convincing as any classic". The term classic here connotes both Eastern and Western traditions, and suggests the extent to which the poet is working at the nexus of the two.

The versatile haiku form has been employed by many contemporary Australian poets, from Janice Bostok to Ross Clarke and Bronwyn Lea, but there has not been a more perfect marriage of Australian content and Japanese form than the first of Sydney poet Jane Gibian's Summer Sequence, taken from her new collection, Ardent:

Eschewing all poetic trickery, the basic aim of the haiku is to capture a precise (seasonal) moment with pristine lucidity; the dynamism is provided by the kireji, or turn, which functions much like the volta in a conventional sonnet.

seeks to enlist wide recognition that southern hemisphere kigo is not always understood or given its true value, even by those of us who live here. This, to date, has been inevitable.
After all, haiku originated from northern hemisphere Japan – and with the exception of a few southern hemisphere visionaries such as Janice Bostok in the 1970s– it found its most empathetic following in countries which experienced similar seasonal experiences and their related flora and fauna.

There will never be a 'collection of Australian kigo', an Australian saijiki to which Australian poets adhere. Even a collection of agreed season words is unlikely.

... Not kigo. I suggest national-symbolic keywords.

But these keywords can not be prescribed; their usage can not be enforced; only future generations can decide if their effectiveness persists. They must be allowed to evolve from the work of many poets over a long period. And they will, they will, if we write and share haiku about Australia.

Haiku groups
As in Japan, small groups are at the heart and soul of Australian haiku writing. These are poems of observation, so it is fitting the groups are regionally based, allowing members to share urban or rural landscape.

These groups include Cloudcatchers (Northern NSW, led by Quendryth Young); Bindii Haiku Group (Adelaide, led by Lynette Arden); Mari Warabiny (Perth, led by Maureeen Sexton) Red Dragonflies (Sydney, led by Vanessa Proctor); Watersmeet (Hobart, led by Lyn Reeves) and Ozku (Sydney, led by Dawn Bruce.) The ‘paper wasp’ group (Brisbane led by Katherine Samuelowicz) is currently not meeting regularly but it is hoped that this will resume soon. It is not unusual for groups to go a little quiet and then reinvent themselves.
In Melbourne, Myron Lysenko conducts haiku walks ‘Ginko with Lysenko’ four times a year.

Watersmeet haiku group
Watersmeet is a group of people in Hobart who write and share haiku.
All Watersmeet members have had haiku published in a wide variety of print and on-line journals. Some have won prizes and commendations for their haiku and haiku-related works.



ROOKU

Rooku is an Australian variant of the short Japanese form called haiku, but without the usual rules. Rooku also lends itself to humour. Rooku has an Australian bent, and is more relaxed in structure.
It is a poetic snapshot of a moment in time.

Jeanette Stace (1917 – 2006)

low tide
I walk to you
across the sky

On 2nd October Jeanette Stace died peacefully. She was one of New Zealand's leading haiku poets and made a contribution to English language haiku, not only through her own poetry, but also by encouraging others to write and enjoy haiku.

She received many awards for her work, but was always modest about her achievements. Jeanette was an invaluable member of the New Zealand Poetry Society committee for many years.
