Socotra Island

The Socotra Island ; meaning 'the island of bliss'.

Socotra or Soqotra is a small archipelago of four islands in the Indian Ocean. The largest island, also called Socotra, is about 95% of the landmass of the archipelago. It lies off some 240 kilometres (150 mi) east of the Horn of Africa and 380 kilometres (240 mi) south of the Arabian Peninsula.
The island is very isolated and through the process of speciation, a third of its plant life is found nowhere else on the planet. It has been described as the most alien-looking place on Earth.

Socotra is one of the most isolated landforms on Earth of continental origin (i.e. not of volcanic origin). The archipelago was once part of the supercontinent of Gondwana and detached during the Miocene, in the same set of rifting events that opened the Gulf of Aden to its northwest.

Socotra is considered the jewel of biodiversity in the Arabian Sea.

During his war adventures, the young Greek titan Alexander the Great got attracted by Socotra. It is said that it was Alexander's tutor, Aristotle, who peaked interest in Socotra by referring to the availability of myrrh some time around 330 BC.

Explanation

KHAMIR is a type of bread
made from maize flour mixed with barley.

Millet, sorghum [looks like big millet] and maize as main food crops in Yemen.
It's not just millet. It is pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum), finger millet and little millet. They are used for human food in the form of flour.
In Lahaj very common Khamir lahaji, baked in traditional ceramic ovens [Moufa].

The rivers in Lahaj are not perennial. It is floodwater [Sujul] in the monsoon rain season. Therefor, when the wadis are filled up.
A lot of families (Aden City) go there by car to see, smell and taste this beauty.
For me is a trip to Lahaj or Lahj always connected with the taste of its bread (khamir; fermented dough, cooked/baked in a ceramic oven). Bread might be not enough, so we add self-grilled chicken [on charcoal] in an orchard near a jasmine plantation.

Location:
Lahj Governorate is located 320 km southwest of the Capital City of Sana’a and 30 km to the east of the City of Aden and is considered a crossing point to and from many governorates.
The most Famous Mountains in Lahj Governorate:
- Radfan Mountains
- Yafie Mountains

Climate:
The governorates climate varies according to the topography of the terrain. In the coastal plains the temperature can rise in the summer to 32∞C, where the mean temperature in the winter comes down to 20∞C. The coastal plains also witness rainfall in the winter and autumn. However in the mountainous highlands, rainfall is witnessed in the spring and summer seasons.

Agricultural Products:
The cutivated area in the Governorate of Lahj is 60,000 feddans. The most popular wadis are Wadi Tuban, Wadi Wirzan, Wadi Yahr, Wadi Saba and Wadi Al-Rruja’a. Along the banks of Wadi Tiban, a number of recent dams were constructed. Since Wadi Tiban is characterized by a semi-tropical climate this fills the gardens of Lahj Governorate with vegetables, fruits, various types of grain and long fiber cotton.

Explanation

Nyepi is a day to make and keep the balance of nature. It is based on the story of when King Kaniska I of India was chosen in 78 A.D. The King was famous for his wisdom and tolerance for the Hinduism and Buddhism societies. In that age, Aji Saka did Dharma Yatra (the missionary tour to promote and spread Hinduism) to Indonesia and introduce the Saka year.

Nyepi Day or silent day is a unique day where entire island of Bali is silent. There is no traffic, fire and human activities are allowed on this day. Bali Island is keep black out on the night where is there is no single light is allowed. This is very unique where there is no one region or country can stop the activities within a day in the world, but here in Bali you can meet it.

Nyepi day or silent day is a unique way of Balinese Hindu in Bali to celebrate their New Year which is called Caka Year.
Balinese Hindus have many kind of celebrations (some sacred days) but Nyepi is, perhaps the most important of the island's religious days and the prohibitions are taken seriously, particularly in villages outside of Bali's southern tourist belt.

In 2007, the Caka year is on 19 March 2007 where usual activities of procession to celebrate the Nyepi Day is held like Melasti Ceremony, Ogoh – Ogoh Precession and Ngembak Geni day.

Melasti Ceremony
is one of the important Balinese Hindu rituals that are held every one year before the Nyepi Day.

Ogoh – Ogoh Procession or Big Giant Idol Pageant
One day before the Nyepi Day / silent day, it was regularly big event in Bali to pageant the big giant idol which is called Ogoh-Ogoh.

Ngembak Geni (the day after Nyepi) is the beginning day of Caka Year that is usually used to visit each other among the humanity (socializing). The social ambience is very felt in this day where mostly the Balinese can meet each other and forgive the sin if they have made a mistake.

The Balinese use many different calendar systems. They have adopted the Gregorian calendar for business and government purposes. But for the endless procession of holy days, temple anniversaries, celebrations, sacred dances, building houses, wedding ceremonies, death and cremation processes and other activities that define Balinese life, they have two calendar systems.

The first is the Pawukon (from the word Wuku which means week) and Sasih (which is means month). Wuku consists of 30 items starting from Sinta, the first Wuku and end up with the Watugunung the last one. The Pawukon, a 210-day ritual calendar brought over from Java in the 14th century, is a complex cycle of numerological conjunctions that provides the basic schedule for ritual activities on Bali.
Sasih, a parallel system of Indian origin, is a twelve month lunar calendar that starts with the vernal equinox and is equally important in determining when to pay respect to the Gods.

The Acacia genus, which includes all the wattles, is the biggest group of trees and shrubs in Australia, topping even the eucalypts in diversity.

Wattle Day's long and interesting history has been described in some detail by Maria Hitchcock in her delightful book simply entitled Wattle. Most of the following facts are sourced from Wattle, with permission from the author.

The first known use of wattle as a meaningful emblem in the Australian colonies dates back to the early days of Tasmania (1838), when the wearing of silver wattle sprigs was encouraged on the occasion of an anniversary celebration of the seventeenth century European discovery of the island.

Of course the original inhabitants of Australia had many uses for the wattle plant; the boomerang, for example, has created its own widespread meaning in the word itself and in its shape.

In North America we have tumbleweeds in August or September, which is late summer or early fall mainly in the Southern midwestern states such as Texas and Oklahoma.

As you know, when the Spanish discovered the Americas, they explored for more than just gold. They found many species of plant cultivated by the Native Americans that they took back to Europe (tomatoes, potatoes, squash, chocolate, tobacco and sunflowers for instance). Conversely, the New England settlers brought seeds with them, including many medicinal herbs that have now naturalized on these continents (soapwort, Queen Anne's lace, dandelion, clover).

Tumbleweed, now a ubiquitous icon of the American west, sneaked in by ship from Russia.

Climate of Florida

The climate of North and Central Florida is humid subtropical. South Florida has a tropical climate. There is a defined rainy season from June through September, which are the months most at risk of landfalling tropical cyclones. Thunderstorms, though lightning, lead to several deaths per year statewide. Florida is one of the most tornado-prone states in the United States.

During mid summer, dust emanating from Africa affects the state, turning skies white and decreasing air quality.

Dry Season
Between October and May, fronts regularly sweep through the state which keeps conditions dry, particularly over the peninsula.
Towards the end of the dry season in the spring, brush fires become common statewide.

In winters where an El Niño climate cycle exists, rainfall increases while temperatures are cooler statewide.

In North Florida, snow and sleet have been witnessed as early as November and as late as April, though most areas do not experience any frozen precipitation during a typical year. Easterly winds off the warm waters of the Gulf Stream running through the Florida Straits keep temperatures moderate across the southern peninsula year round.

Laura Sherman is a mother of three young children. She lives in Florida with her husband of seventeen years. Laura is a chess coach and freelance writer. Haiku poems are made of 3 lines where the first and third lines consist of 5 syllables and the second line 7 syllables.

Florida is bordered by Georgia and Alabama to the north. On the west Florida is bordered by Alabama and the Gulf of Mexico. To the south and to the east, Florida is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean.

Florida Pool Cage Ideas
A pool cage is a screened-in area that covers a pool and adjacent patio. There are many areas in Florida where almost every house in the subdivision has a pool with a pool cage. They are not particularly attractive by themselves, but with some decorative additions, you can turn your pool cage into a true outdoor room for family recreation.

Plants
Pool cage areas have no actual visual boundaries, but are surrounded by screening that is almost invisible to the eye. Add a series of large lush potted tropical plants around the edge of your pool cage. This will give your eye somewhere to rest and subconsciously tell your mind that this is the edge of the room. Plants will create a more defined space in which to work, and will add color to a plain area.

Furniture
Many pool cages confine a large patio area beside the pool. Decorate this area as if it were another room in your house. If you want to make it a dining room, place a serving table or small bar along with the table and chairs. For a cozy relaxing retreat, place four cushy chairs around a square coffee table, and add side tables with candles and potted plants.

Relaxing
Many people place chaise lounge chairs beside the pool in their cage. Make a different statement by installing a free-standing hammock in their place. Surround the hammock with potted palm trees, place a small side table next to the hammock for a frosty drink and a book, and you'll have the perfect setting for a relaxing afternoon.

The snowy owl can be found in Florida, according to research, but there aren’t many of them. It was the one and only time I saw one here. When the nets of the pool cage are broken, birds can come inside.

Hammock Park

The Hammock is a unique 90-acre natural park inhabited by various forms of wildlife and plant life. It has five miles of nature trails, three picnic shelters,an observation platform, rest rooms and a playground area. The park is located at the northeast end of San Mateo Drive and is open every day from sunrise to sunset. Many birds can be seen at Hammock Park and the park is listed in the "Great Florida Birding Trail Book."

Hammock Park is a beautiful park with walking trails. There are tons of orange trees there, but the oranges are rather sour. However we discovered the tangerines can be sweeter. My children will ask me to pick them tangerine after tangerine when they are available. It’s a challenge though, because there aren’t many tangerine trees (and the animals and other visitors will pick them too).

Honeymoon Island

The pioneers called it Hog Island, but it became Honeymoon Isle in 1939 when a New York developer built 50 palm - thatched bungalows for honeymooners. Today, visitors can drive across Dunedin Causeway to enjoy the sun - drenched Gulf beaches, mangrove swamps, and tidal flats. Nature lovers will find osprey nests, a wide variety of shorebirds, and one of the few remaining virgin slash pine forests in South Florida.
The park boasts several nature trails and bird observation areas. Visitors can swim, fish, and snorkel in the warm waters of the Gulf or picnic while they enjoy the beautiful scenery. Shelling is particularly good here, as the Gulf currents deposit an incredible variety of seashells on the shore.

Last year I discovered patches of mud in the ocean.
We had fun plastering it all over us and then washing it off.

Explanation

Armadillos are New World placental mammals with a leathery armor shell. The Dasypodidae are the only surviving family in the order Cingulata, part of the superorder Xenarthra, along with the anteaters and sloths.
The word armadillo in Spanish means "little armored one".
The Aztec called them azotochtli, Nahuatl for “turtle-rabbit”.

Armadillos species are primarily found in South and Central America, particularly in Paraguay and surrounding areas. Many species are endangered

Gestation lasts anywhere from 60 to 120 days, depending on species, although the nine-banded armadillo also exhibits delayed implantation, so the young are not typically born for eight months after mating. Most members of the genus Dasypus give birth to four monozygotic young (that is, identical quadruplets), but other species may have typical litter sizes that range from one to eight. The young are born with soft, leathery skin, which hardens within a few weeks; they reach sexual maturity in three to 12 months, depending on the species. Armadillos are solitary animals that do not share their burrows with other adults.

The Nine-banded Armadillo
(Dasypus novemcinctus)

Armadillos were not always present in Florida.
During the past century, they expanded their range from Texas into the Florida panhandle. From 1920 to about 1970, there were several introductions of armadillos into the Atlantic coast region of Florida. Then the panhandle and peninsular populations expanded until they merged. Armadillos are now found in uplands throughout Florida, except in the Keys and parts of the Everglades and Big Cypress swamp.

Reproduction
Although armadillos breed in late July, the 5-month gestation period is delayed which results in the young being born in February or March. Only one litter is produced each year, and it always includes four identical young of the same sex because they develop from a single egg. The young look like the adults except that they are smaller and their armor coat remains soft and leathery for some time, becoming harder with age.
